Where to get the numbers
Use a written contractor estimate for a defined scope wherever possible. For an unresolved issue, get an assessment before assigning a repair price: the work needed to find the cause may be separate from the work needed to fix it.
Use one currency throughout. The currency selector formats your numbers; it does not convert them. Include tax, permits, disposal and other fees in a line item or in your supplied price so they are not counted twice.
How the calculation works
For each line, quantity × low unit estimate gives the low subtotal, and quantity × high unit estimate gives the high subtotal. The calculator adds the lines and then multiplies each subtotal by 1 + contingency ÷ 100.
For example, a purely illustrative $1,000–$1,500 subtotal with a user-chosen 10% allowance becomes $1,100–$1,650. The allowance is a budgeting assumption, not a recommended percentage or a guarantee that unknown work will fit inside it.
Compare scopes before totals
- Record the contractor or source, quote date and what each line includes.
- Do not add competing quotes for the same job together. Use them to set a range for that one scope.
- Put unresolved work in your follow-up notes. An omitted price does not mean the repair costs nothing.
- Update the worksheet after professional diagnosis or a change in scope.
